Things like slouching and sitting too long can adversely affect our back, but there are simple steps people can take to improve their overall back health. Our spine surgeon has put together a list of valuable tips for improving the overall health of your spine.

1. Practice Good Posture

Good posture is probably among the easiest things you can do to ensure that you keep your back strong. Now that everyone uses smartphones, people’s posture is worse than ever. The key to good posture is always being aware of it and then correcting your posture when you notice you have been slouching.

2. Use Deep Breathing Techniques

Deep breathing techniques enable the spinal nerves to move in their channels, which strengthens the spine and provides natural pain reduction. Put your hands on your belly and be conscious of your breathing and take deep breaths. While you do this, maintain your posture.

3. Use Simple Exercises to Strengthen Your Core

Regular, low to moderate exercise is perhaps one of the best things you can do to to strengthen your spine. 10 minutes a day is enough to keep your spine in good working order. Stretch your back and use low resistance exercises that build your core strength to keep your spine strong.

4. Your Diet Directly Affects Your Spine

Healthy, lean foods are the building blocks for muscles and a lean body, which can directly affect your spine. Keep a healthy diet to keep your spine strong. Also, omega 3s and vitamin B are wonderful for your spine.

5. Get Some Sun

The vitamin D that the sun emits is wonderful for your spine. Also, like a plant, the human body tends to stand up straighter when it is in the sun.

6. Sleep Well

Getting regular sleep and sleeping in a comfortable position on a firm mattress can have a huge impact on the overall health of your spine.

Dr. Melamed is an exceptional physician. I initially came to him for my spine concerns, but he took the time to look at the bigger picture, truly listen, and help me find the right resources and specialists for a separate, complex medical condition outside his specialty. …

I was incapacitated, couldn’t stand, sit or walk. The pain was excruciating. I’ll spare you the diagnosis, but it was serious. I could only lie down with my foot up to reduce the pain. It required EMERGENCY surgery. …

I want to thank Dr. Melamed for taking great care of me. Dr. Melamed performed a minimally invasive microdiscectomy to free nerve that was being pinched and causing pain in my back and in my leg. Dr. Melamed’s approach is a very conservative, which I very much appreciate. …
