Video · The Doctors segment
Published on YouTube Length 4:21
Jenny joins Dr. Melamed on The Doctors after her surgery, and the hosts show side-by-side x-rays of the curvature in her spine. She says she now walks a couple of miles a day and that a friend's letter-writing campaign put her in touch with the show and Dr. Melamed. Asked how patients can tell if they're being pushed into surgery they don't need, Dr. Melamed says most spine surgeries aren't emergencies and an urgent fusion is rarely needed. The show then surprises Jenny and her fiance Peter with gifts for their wedding.

After many years of agony, Jenny is actually here with us today. We’re happy to say she is joined by her orthopedic surgeon, Dr. Hooman Melamed. And so this is the beauty of what we do here on The Doctors, because you sit here today with us next to Dr. Melamed a changed woman.
I am completely changed. I had given up hope.
Jenny, how has life changed for you since the surgery?
Completely changed. I am walking a couple miles a day and my life has completely turned around, thanks to Dr. Melamed.
Just look at these, look at these side-by-side x-rays, because you don’t have to be a doctor to see the difference in the curvature of Jenny’s spine. But when your friend told you about the episode and came to you with this concept of, you know what, there maybe hope, did you, did you believe her?
It felt like a miracle from the beginning. She did a letter-writing campaign to all of you, and that she called The Doctors, and then we got in touch with Dr. Melamed, and it was a miracle all the way around, truly a miracle. I was in a dark, dark place.
I get asked a lot on the street, do I enjoy hosting this show, and I love moments like this, because I think, you know, sometimes if this show has been on the air for nine years, wasn’t on the air, that Jenny, you’d be sitting in your home in Columbus, Ohio, sad and pain, depressed. So I’m so proud of what we do. And the other thing, Dr. Melamed, I love about what you do is you’re very open and honest. A lot of people suffer from back pain. Jenny clearly needed this, but how do you know if you’re potentially being set up to get a surgery you don’t really need?
Most surgeries, they don’t have to be done right away. Thank God spine surgery is not, a lot of them are not emergency. You can take your time. You can try other things, you know, be worried. I think if the surgeon wants to rush into the, hey, let’s go, we need to do a fusion right away. There’s rarely ever an emergency or urgent fusion operation, rarely.
But in this case, Jenny, you needed this. You got it and it was successful. But I want to talk about something else in your life that has been incredibly successful, and that is we have your fiance Peter in the audience joining us. Is it true you two have known each other for quite some time?
Yes. We were in second grade together and he’s been there with me through this struggle. He loved me even when I was hunched over. Dr. Melamed really gave me a life, the second chance at life, and all these good things are happening. It was good before but now it’s even better.
We are so very excited for the two of you, couldn’t be any happier. This is a big deal. You have a lot of friends and family out there who have been a big help. Wedding planning we know is very expensive. We have a few surprises.
So the owner of ShutterHead Studios in your hometown of Columbus, Ohio is going to personally photograph your special day. You’re also going to get the prints, which were valued at $4,000. And what wedding of course is complete without a wedding dress? So Brides Across America, they’re going to provide you with a beautiful wedding gown and accessories. But a wedding without a party is no wedding at all, and we wanted your party to be fun and stress-free. So Ohio-based party rental company Eventsource, they’re going to outfit your wedding and reception with all your party rental needs, valued at over $5,500. The only thing we ask, Peter and Jenny, is send us a few pictures of that beautiful day.
Oh, thank you so much. Everything is turned into a miracle for me.
And this is proof that you’d never ever ever ever give up on your dreams. She’s a changed woman. Best of luck in the future. Dr. Melamed, once again, great work.
Thank you very much.
